Swedish House Mafia Review. Ushuaia Ibiza 11 August 2024
If you also watched Swedish House Mafia’s recent set from Tomorrowland, you will likely understand why we booked flights to see them in Ibiza that very same night. With the trio returning to Ushuaia for a six-week residency this year as opposed to a one-night appearance in recent years, it was too good an opportunity to miss out on.
Arielle Free kicked the evening off at 5 pm, followed by Tjalan at 6.30 pm and Moojo at 7.45 pm before Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Angello & Axwell ‘SHM’ joined the stage at 9.30 pm. After hearing a few people throughout the day advise others not to head to Ushuaia until around 8 pm due to the heat (it was one of the hottest days of the summer so far), it was no surprise to us that when we arrived at 7 pm, it was relatively quiet. However, it allowed us to experience being at the front of the stage, and the crowd soon picked up.
There was a vast tilted screen at the height of the stage so that everyone could see the DJs performing no matter how far back you were standing. Cameras followed the trio as they walked out to ‘Remember’ by Steve Angello, a song that holds a special place in the hearts of their fans, greeting and taking selfies with fans. The three superstar DJs started their set off with a mix of a few of their biggest hits, including Miami 2 Ibiza, One (Your Name), and Greyhound, which got the crowd going. Their own hits were followed by remixes of well-known songs, including Show Me Love, Satisfaction, Gotye, and Somebody I Used To Know. They later played their 2024 release, Lioness, as a plane flew over Ushuaia in perfect timing with the drop, creating a breathtaking moment that will be etched in our memories forever.
Next came Save the World and Antidote before they went back to when Steve Angello & Axwell joined forces to create Supermode playing Tell Me Why. Moth To a Flame and Don’t You Worry Child came towards the end of their set, and as with their Tomorrowland set, the trio ended with a remix of Finally with Alicia Keys on vocals (original song by Kings of Tomorrow). We can’t see this has been released yet, so perhaps this is a teaser for later in the year. As the trio’s set unfolded, we couldn’t help but wonder if any Olympic medallists in the crowd were celebrating their achievements. Our wonder turned to reality when, mid-way through their set, SHM invited Olympic skateboarding gold medallist Keegan Palmer on stage for a celebratory shoutout. The inclusivity of the event was further highlighted by the presence of other celebrities, including Lando Norris and Jason Statham, making it a night to remember for everyone in attendance
Everything we had hoped for
Contrary to the trend of venues limiting or banning phone usage on the dancefloor, Ushuaia offered free party WiFi for social media use, highlighting the freedom of expression at the event. The absence of phone restrictions allowed the crowd to capture and share the most significant moments and everything in between, enhancing the sense of community and shared experience.
The Swedish House Mafia’s setlist was similar to their recent Tomorrowland setlist. The production, as you would expect at Ushuaia, was incredible. The night was everything we had hoped for and one of our favourite nights of the Summer so far. Our advice to you is to book the flights! With only two more dates left to see them, don’t miss out!
