Barcelona star midfielder, Lionel Messi, is rumoured to have an interest in the purchase of a well known Ibiza Hotel. Es Vive Hotel, located in Figueretas on the east coast and owned by three UK business partners, has been sold to a Barcelona business consortium and re-branded Hotel MiM Ibiza Es Vive. Messi who is a regular visitor to the island with his family each summer, was recently linked to the purchase of a €30 million Hotel operated by his MiM Hotel chain in the Catalan stronghold of Stiges, the gay friendly resort which was the birthplace of the iconic Ibiza club Pacha.
The sale was completed only last week, so its still very early to know what, if any, interest Messi has in the property. If Messi is connected, it will certainly please the locals, many of which are fanatical Barcelona fans. Hotel Es Vive would have been considered a landmark venue, a child of a golden era in Ibiza culture, established in 1999 as one of the first clubber friendly hotels on the island, hosting raucous after parties for trendy Ibiza clubs. Its passing to new corporate owners, reflects the fast evolving landscape of the islands tourism industry from indigenous hippy chic, to branded celebrity fashion.
