Nikki Beach Club in Majorca |
Hotel Sol S’Argamassa, the location for the new Nikki Beach concept in Ibiza, will become the next Hotel in Ibiza to migrate to another brand with a redesigned concept planned for 2014. Built in the 70’s, the Sol S’Argamassa, was a staple diet of traditional family holidaymakers and older couples, who enjoyed it’s sedate and quiet environment. Located between Santa Eularia and the resort of Es Cana, the area is popular with walkers and beach lovers alike. The Hotel is owned by the Sol Melia Group, Spain’s market leader in resort Hotels. Founded in 1956, the chain employs over 16,500 people with 351 hotels located in 35 different countries. In 2011, the chain became, Melia Hotels International, with new plans to develop its brand into the future.
Those plans included fresh, dynamic ideas and international growth to reposition its midscale brand. In 2012 the group announced its association with the Nikki Beach Club, a luxury lifestyle concept, marketed at a well heeled clientèle. The redeveloped, Calvia Beach Resort in Majorca, owned in partnership by Melia Hotels and Evertaas Group, added Nikki Beach Mallorca to the resort, with a €20 million refurbishment of the old family themed Sol Antillas Barbados Hotel and Majorca Beach complex. The Sol S’Argamassa in Ibiza, is set to become the next Hotel in the Melia group, to renovate and refurbish with the Nikki Beach concept being added this season. Notably, the Calvia Beach Resort in Majorca, where Nikki Beach is located, has been declared a project of “Autonomous Interest” by the Balearic Government for economic recovery and future employment in the sector.

What plans the Melia Hotel group have for the Sol S’Argamassa are unclear at present. What we do know is that the old S’Argamassa Hotel will close on October 1st, 2013 to “migrate to another brand within the Melia Hotels International portfolio”. In Majorca, the Calvia Beach Resort has government support to develop the area with cafes, restaurants, bars and Theme Parks, to offer “a better social experience that will enhance economic sustainability of the area and tap into the winter tourism market such as hiking, cycling and golf”. Its a similar direction, to the one being taken by the indigenous Matutes Group, who want to add up to four new golf courses in Ibiza to develop the winter tourism market. Nikki Beach Ibiza, is just an element of what Melia Hotels International may want to do at S’Argamassa.
Development of the area in general and future plans for what could turn out to be a similar resort as to the one in Majorca, is where the real story lies. Cala Martina is the jewel of the area, a lovely unspoilt beach with traditional Spanish charm. The closest hotel to the Sol S’Argamassa, is the 3* family Hotel Club Augusta about 100 meters away, also with a prime beach front location. It is owned by the small Colors Hotels chain with just two hotels in its portfolio. While not on the market, a private offer could be made for the property which has great potential to be redeveloped. What we are witnessing in Playa Den Bossa, may also be coming to S’Argamassa. While Playa Den Bossa is a typical tourist resort, S’Argamassa is not and any major development in this area, would be worrying. The blog will be keeping a close eye on this story and in the near future, we hope to interview Nikki Beach Ibiza on their plans for the site.
