Abel Matutes Denies Break Up With Yann Pissenem.
Abel Matutes Prats, President of The Palladium Hotel Group and co-owner of Ushuaia Entertainment, the company that runs the Groups nightlife business in partnership with Yann Pissenems, The Night League, has unequivocally denied media reports that they are to end their 14-year business partnership. A recent article in Crónica Global, a Spanish-language digital newspaper based in Barcelona, reported that Matutes had offered Pissenem 32 million euros to dissolve their business partnership, a claim that Matutes has firmly refuted.
In a post on social media, Mr Matutes, referencing the article, stated ‘Congratulations to the journalist for making up a story from A to Z. The relationship between Yann and me is better than ever—pathetic journalistic garbage.’ After dispensing with the services of Pepe Rosello, Matutes’ partner in the Space Ibiza project, Abel Matutes went into business with Yann Pissenem, a young French entrepreneur who had cut his teeth on the Barcelona nightlife scene before arriving in Ibiza to open Ushuaia Beachclub in 2008.
Pissenem had displayed a Midas touch in Ibiza, and his front-of-house and networking skills, combined with a hard work ethic, soon brought him to the attention of Abel Matutes, his landlord at Ushuaia Beach Club. Together, they established Ushuaia Entertainment in 2012, opening Ushuaia Beach Hotel as a daytime club venue before Hi was launched in 2017.
This year, Ushuaia Entertainment opened UNVRS, a multi-million-euro redevelopment of the former KU-Privilege site, a project that has been a resounding success. While there was understandable pressure to open UNVRS on time, the relationship between Matutes and Pissenem was seen as rock-solid on the island. However the business partners are rarely photographed together.
No smoke without fire.
While there is no smoke without fire, this report will undoubtedly put the cat amongst the pigeons in Ibiza. There is no love lost between Ushuaia Entertainment and other big clubs on the island, which view it as a predatory company monopolising the island’s diverse music scene for commercial gain. Over the past few seasons, Ushuaia Entertainment has poached several high-profile DJs from other clubs, severely damaging their programming. We will be updating this breaking story as it develops.
