2016 will go down in the history books as a year of monumental change for the island of Ibiza. The magical white isle is always one step ahead and as unpredictable as ever, but this year for a certain generation, a cycle was completed with the loss of two iconic clubbing brands, Space and Pacha. Uncertainty surrounds the future of both clubs with differing opinions and reports doing the rounds, but what is clear, is the upmarket direction the island is taking. Money talks in Ibiza and a new generation of investor capital is tapping into the seemingly limitless disposable income of the trendy 24-36 tourist market that likes to party. With the passing of the Spanish equivalent of April Fools day earlier this week, we have dusted down and cleaned our crystal ball to see what an alternative future may hold for Ibiza 2017.
1 – Pacha Moves To PDB
It is revealed that David Guetta and the Matutes Group are the investors behind the mysterious Trilantic private equity takeover of Pacha, which will now move its iconic cherries to Playa Den Bossa and take up residency in the old Space building. The old Pacha club turns into “Lio The VIP Revolution”
2 – The Return Of Enter
The return of Richie Hawtin and his Enter party to Ibiza. After failing to negotiate a deal with Pepe Rosello, the sake loving DJ finds the Matutes group easier to do business with and moves back to his old Thursday residency. The parties black spot branding is replaced with an even darker € symbol.
3 – West End Jehovahs
Jehovah Witnesses take over the West End. In a desperate bid to clean up the streets of San Antonio the local council enlist the services of the Evangelistic order to replace the looky looky men, thief’s and prostitutes that prey on unsuspecting tourists.
4 – Carl Cox Lands on Ushuaia
The Jet transporting Carl Cox’s vast vinyl record collection to Ibiza, accidentally drops its cargo onto the VIP terrace at Ushuaia as it comes into land at nearby Ibiza Airport. The impact area is later re-branded “12 Inches Of Carl Cox”
5 – Elrow Moves To San Antonio
One of the islands most popular parties Elrow, which announced that it would be jumping into bed with Martin Ferrer at Amnesia, decides to bring a new version of its colourful vibrancy to San Antonio, by unleashing a daytime party at a well known venue near the West End.
6 – Space Moves to Es Paradis
Pepe Rosello of Space shakes hands with Pepe Aquirre of Es Paradis in a deal that brings Space to San Antonio. The marble interior of the pyramid glass roofed club, soon plays host to some of the best parties on the island with its carpark tuning into a sunset terrace.
7 – England Turns Green
With Brexit looming, Ireland opens an embassy in Ibiza to deal with all the British applications for passports to remain working in the EU. In return, Ocean Beach Club agrees to change its orange theme colour to green and sell premium bottles of Guinness.
The Dannykay blog would like to wish all our readers and friends in Ibiza a very happy New Year and we look forward to another special season ahead for Ibiza 2017.
