Memories Of Hippy Ibiza. Morna Valley School

Written by Dan Kirwan
Founded by the Blakstad family from Canada in 1973, the school was a unique learning centre for the children of the hippie era. A Hogwarts style institution, that employed an experimental and unconventional curriculum, which included Chinese calligraphy and pottery. Under the direction of principal Mary Blakstad, teachers were renowned academics and free thinkers who were encouraged to draw inspiration from the island’s energy. Rolf Blakstad also founded the highly regarded Blakstad Design Consultants, a company that nurtures the island’s traditional architectural values. Mary Blakstad retired in 1981 when the school came under the direction of John Tunks. In 2004 the school became an International college and remains a proud centre of educational excellence.
