‘Avin it Large. Kevin and Perry Amnesia Ibiza Review.
We came back from Amnesia and said the same thing straight away: that was the most fun we’ve ever had in Ibiza.Arms in the air, glow sticks and bucket hats everywhere. The best crowd you could ask for, people completely lost in music that clearly meant something to them.
There was a freedom to the dancefloor that you don’t always feel anymore. Nobody was bothered about looking cool or how they were dancing. People were going for it, and that energy was infectious.
We didn’t go for a DJ. We went for the music. That’s probably the biggest difference between this night and so many others we’ve been to in Ibiza. We went for the tracks that instantly take you somewhere else. The ones where you only need to hear the first few seconds before you’re locking eyes with the person next to you on the dancefloor, both knowing exactly what’s about to come. Everyone probably had their own memory attached to those tracks – from a memorable night out, an 18-30s holiday or simply the film itself. But for those few hours, thousands of those memories were all playing out together on the same dancefloor.
It wasn’t about looking towards the DJ booth, waiting for someone to create the moment. The dance floor was the moment. And suddenly we understood why almost everyone we spoke to had been to the Kevin & Perry experience before. Most had flown into Ibiza just for this party and did so every year. There were many Kevin & Perry fans, but most ravers we met were there for the legendary trance sound of the late 90s and early 00s. We even met a few people who had never seen the film.
The now infamous Kevin & Perry experience takes over Amnesia once a year, bringing the music and madness of the cult film back to the club where its most iconic scenes were filmed. Don’t get us wrong, we love the film. But before we went, there was a small part of us wondering whether the night might be a little bit cheesy – Kevin & Perry references everywhere, fancy dress and a soundtrack leaning heavily on the novelty of the film. We couldn’t have been more wrong. Yes, the references were there. But underneath all of that was a seriously good club night.
Music brings you back.
Huge trance records from the late 90s and early 00s filled Amnesia again. Robert Miles’ Children. Lizard. Mystery Land, to name but a few. Music that was made for clubs like Amnesia. And the night never took itself too seriously either. Ben Hemsley turning up dressed as Eyeball Paul was iconic.
The DJs looked like they were having the time of their lives too, giving the crowd exactly what they’d come for. Names that were part of Ibiza’s dancefloors all those years ago were back behind the decks doing what they do best – making people dance. Seb Fontaine, Dave Pearce, Ian Van Dahl, N-Trance and Signum were just some of the names taking us straight back to that era.
We went expecting a Kevin & Perry throwback night. We came away having had one of our favourite nights in Ibiza. Maybe it was nostalgia. Maybe it was hearing those records inside Amnesia. Or maybe it was being surrounded by a crowd who had come for the same reason we had- to dance. Whatever it was, we agree with so many people saying it’s the best atmosphere on the island all year.
The music might take you back. But nights like this remind you why you still go out in the first place.
