From the freestyle, organic spirit of the 90s that characterised the Balearic island of Ibiza, with its laid-back beaches and free-spirited gatherings, to the cutting-edge, VIP-driven “super-club” scene of 2025, Ibiza has consistently positioned itself at the forefront of the world’s electronic music scene. This little island with a big voice has always reinvented itself. It has embraced innovations and set trends while also nurturing a cosmopolitan mix of musical styles and cultures.

This Mediterranean cradle of electronic music has attracted world-renowned DJs, producers, promoters and clubbers. Ibiza is forever changing and adapting, serving as an innovation hub where fresh sounds and trends emerge each summer, shaping the future of electronic music on a global scale. From 1995 to the turn of the millennium, the island basked in the sound of House and Trance. Many in the industry will agree that the golden age of trance occurred during this period, with Cream establishing itself on the island as the number one party alongside Clockwork Orange at Es Paradis.

The cult movie Kevin and Perry was filmed on the island during the summer of 1999, complete with a classic trance-infused soundtrack curated by Judge Jules, whose Judgement Sundays party was the island’s most popular night alongside Manumission at Privilege. It was an innocent time, less commercial, thanks to the peseta’s spending power. The Chillout genre was created by one of the Godfathers of the early Balearic scene, Jose Padilla, at Cafe Del Mar in the 80s.

As the new millennium dawned, the sound of the island shifted. The Sven Väth, Cocoon party at Amnesia, introduced techno to the island, and Cocoon’s new wave of DJs infused the industrial sound of Berlin with the Balearic summer vibe, helping fuel the rise of minimal. Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Marco Carola, Richie Hawtin and Jamie Jones cut their teeth at DC10, the experimental lab of minimal, which nurtured the sound and made the island trendy and cool.

The Rise of EDM and Tech House.

As the first decade of the second millennium drew to a close, the island witnessed the rise of EDM and tech house. David Guetta was instrumental in establishing this new sound, thanks to his highly popular F#CK Me Im Famous party at Pacha, which reigned supreme on the island from 2001 to 2018. FMIF ushered in the rise of VIP culture and table service, transforming the dynamics of Ibiza clubs.

Swedish House Mafia also played a role in the EDM boom on the island. While EDM was taking over, counterculture found a home with the rise of tech house, thanks to artists like Solomun and Marco Carola. It was also the decade that Ushuaia Entertainment was launched, playing to the spending power of the VIP luxury market with the launch of the daytime Ushuaia Beach Hotel concept, Ants and Hi Ibiza, which replaced an old Ibiza icon, Space.

After the closure of Space, the immersive digital theatre era was born as Hi rose from its ashes. It witnessed the rise of melodic techno and afrohouse thanks to DJs like Anyma and Black Coffee. The shift in focus to performance and production values ensured that clubbing was now more about the experience than just the party and the music.

Below, in chronological order, is a video playlist of three decades of underground classics in Ibiza. The above video lists the Ibiza Anthems that defined thirty seasons on the party isle from 1995 to 2025.
