Ibiza Mourns Death Of Ball Pages Cultural Icon Toni den Planes.

Ibiza is mourning the death of one of its most distinguished sons, the cultural and artistic personality Toni Planells, who sadly passed away last night. Born in 1931, Antoni Planells Tur, affectionately known as “Toni d’en Planes,” played a crucial role in preserving Ibicenco folklore and culture. As a talented sonador (traditional musician), he championed the island’s traditional Ball Pagès in the village of Sant Miquel de Balansat, Ibiza.
He is widely recognised as the founder and cultural pillar of the Colla de Balansat, a folkloric group established in 1965 dedicated to preserving the island’s indigenous music, dress, and dance styles in the village of Sant Miquel de Balansat, Ibiza. His home, Can Xicu, perched atop the hill next to the village’s beautiful fortified church, has served as a bar and tobacconist for generations. His daughter, actress Tita Planells, currently runs the family business, carefully preserving its 150-year-old historic character. Tita announced the death of her father today, saying he was “a respectful man, very free, an artist and very loving”. Finally, my Father is resting in peace, as he deserves, surrounded by lots of love and his family. We will greatly miss his absence, but we are full of very good memories.”
In a statement, Colla de Balansat, the group of dancers he established in 1965, paid a heartfelt and intimate tribute to the great man, “Today we find it hard to find words. It’s hard to accept that you will no longer be here to hear the ringing of your castanets, the sound of your drum and flute, or to see how that seed you sowed so many years ago continues to dance. Thank you, Toni, for dedicating your life to Ibiza’s popular culture. Thank you for believing in the country dance when there were still those who thought our traditions might disappear. You did much more than found a group. You helped preserve a part of our people’s soul. You carried the name of Ibiza and its traditions around the world, showing that this island is much more than sun, beaches and nightclubs.”
“Thanks to you, many people discovered the beauty of our folklore, the value of our traditional clothing, the strength of our music, and the uniqueness of the country dance. Generation after generation, you have taught us that our culture is a treasure that must be cared for, shared, and loved every day. That is why, today, we want to say loudly that your work has not been in vain. Because thanks to you, our traditions continue to live. Thanks to you, there are still boys and girls who learn to play, sing and dance. Thanks to you, Balansat continues to dance. And we will always remember you. We will always remember your figure playing your two flutes. We will always remember the pas de Maria, that bagpipe that you liked so much and that, as you said, used to be played in the church.”
If Balansat dances, it is thanks to Toni d’en Planes
“We will always remember those summer Thursdays, when your friends proudly showed off their rifacus, and you, with that smile that characterised you, let go: “No tiene frío, no”. There are so many memories that we keep stored in our hearts that it would be impossible to write them all. But if there is one thing we are clear about, it is that it has been a source of pride, a pleasure, and a privilege to have been able to dance by your side, to have shared the path with you over all these years, and to have had you as a teacher and a reference. Rest in peace, Toni. And wherever you are, we hope that you continue to play a good bagpipe and set the pace of a new dance. If Balansat dances, it is thanks to Toni d’en Planes”
On behalf of the blog, we would like to offer our deepest sympathies and condolences to the Planells family on the passing of their father.
