The pie throwing American DJ, Steve Aoki, is rumoured to be on his way out of the classic Ibicenco club to take up a new residency at Amnesia for Ibiza 2016. The popular EDM performer, whose signature dish was a cake in the face, was always an unusual booking for a club which prefers a more sophisticated style of party. Aoki’s exuberant energy came with a distinct flavor of cheesecake, which was particularity hard to digest after he replaced Guy Gerber on Wednesdays back in 2014. Last season he was moved to Monday nights after the departure of Ibiza Rocks House but the blog understands that both sides are content to go their separate ways. Speculation suggests that Pacha may replace Aoki with a well know in house production and schedule a brand new party for another night. But more of that gossip at a later date.
Thankfully, for Aoki fans, the DJ is expected to hold an Ibiza residency next summer and all the speculation suggests that he is on his way to Amnesia, to join forces with what DJ Mag rate as the Worlds #1 DJ’s at present, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike, for a Super Sunday of EDM marquee matches that will be up there competing with Avicii at Ushuaia. The trio performed together in Miami as “3 Are Legend” at the Ultra festival earlier this year and may want to repeat that industry marketing concept at Amnesia, as Aoki is rated #10 in the world.
With Amnesia expected to easily fill the club with eager EDM fans, Aoki may take over the Terrace while Dimitri and Like Mike remain in the main room which they have made their own over the past two seasons. EDM has become a popular genre on the island, especially with the young, holidaymaker generation and Amnesia is starting to follow Ushuaia’s lead in the popular mainstream market which Ibiza was always happy to ignore in past decades as it followed its own beat which was rooted in House and Techno. While trends and fashion follow house and techno, EDM is commercial big business, attracting celebrity and VIP culture to the island which remains the World leader for electronic dance music.
