The island of Ibiza is cutting though the waters of another summer season with sails full and her crew performing to its optimum level of efficiency and providing us with some interesting and fresh new trends this year. Ibiza opens the channels for others to follow and this summer is no different, with a number of trending venues and fashions on the island proving popular with the tourists, punters and industry insiders alike. I decided to put together a quick Ibiza Trending List to give people a flavor of whats happening on the island this season. We have already reported on the music and the top clubs and DJ’s that are proving a hit and later in the week, we will be bringing you Part II of our mid season report with Part III to follow this weekend. For now here is a roundup on what trending so far on the island.
Beachouse
Ex Chiringito and Sacca proprietor, Johnathon Thorogood, has created a trendy beach side venue on the sands of Playa Den Bossa which serves up a stylish Italian menu along with some cool free parties, where you can dance with sand between your toes. Beachouse has built on last years promise and this summer it is the hot spot on Bossa Beach (if not the island). All roads lead to a packed Guy Gerber on Sundays, (deservedly so) the Dynamic crew on Tuesdays, and Andrea Oliva with Guti on Wednesdays. Book a table, get there early and enjoy an evening of beautiful people, good food and music.
Marco Carolo
Top Dog in Ibiza this summer as he packs out Amnesia every Friday night with the islands #1 party, Music On. There is more room inside a sardine tin but the atmosphere and music is electric. The sold out signs have been up all during the month of August, so blagging a ticket, is the only way in. Don’t miss out on the massive Marco vs Jamie Jones party on September 11 and maybe Marco will return the favor to Jamie at Paradise on Sep 9 (but don’t say I told you).
Food Trend
A number of good restaurants are starting to emerge in Ibiza town, serving food and entertainment until the wee hours of the morning. Most notably there is Lio and Heart leading the way, but there are a number of new venues emerging such as Orso and La Belle Ibiza (San Rafel) just to name a few. A visit to Ibiza town is now a trend for lovers of gastronomical treats, hidden away on the narrow streets surrounding the UNESCO World Heritage site that is, Dalt Villa. The Vara De Ray area is now full of small cafes and food outlets. Ibiza town is most certainly growing up, attracting a more sophisticated and well heeled clientele. Time for the hippies to pack their rucksacks i’m afraid.
Ocean Beach Club
The success story of San Antonio in recent years, the Linker Group shrewdly spotted the big gap in the market for a daytime party venue on the sunset strip and filled it with poolside beds, mid to high priced bottles of champagne, wannabee VIP’s, toned bodies and stilettos. A very British crown doing what they do best, “havin’ it large in Ebeffa” and partying like there is no tomorrow. The poolside bar does a roaring trade, with live performances, DJ’s and non stop parties rocking the place right up to midnight. A well deserved clap on the back for all the team at Ocean Beach Ibiza.
Jamie Jones The Pride Of DC10 |
Life and Death@DC10
While Marco is packing in the trendy techno crowd at Amnesia, it allows for extra space at DC10 to enjoy the more smoother and sophisticated tech sound of Tale Of Us on Friday nights. Popular with industry insiders and workers, this party only runs for 5 weeks and closes on August 28. This one is In the running for Best New Party of Ibiza 2015 and will have the hype connected to it next season…. so try and pay a visit this month.
Jamie Jones
Its rare that Jamie Jones doesn’t have a good season in Ibiza and this ultimate pro is having a banging one again this summer. The cream always rises to the top and I am happy to report that Jones and Paradise are in rude health this year and ensuring that the Tech sound rules the island once again.
High Quality Drugs
Lots of reports about the high quality of drugs available on the island this summer. So if people are partaking make sure to cut down on the measures and be careful. There have been a number of deaths already so be very aware that potency and strength is high. Always, always, drink plenty of water so the body does not blow its thermostat and overheat. The free tap water is ok to drink in the club toilets and while not ideal, its a way better option than dehydrating with nothing. Please come home safe and don’t leave your brain on the plane- too many families have buried loved ones this year.
Tattoos
When you see the Tattoo artists out on the streets with mobile tattoo guns, you know that its becoming a trend. Last few years it was body painting, this year Tattoos, (while always popular) are becoming more of a mainstream trend this summer. Just remember a fact of life – relationships break up and skin wrinkles.
Air B&B
Hundreds of private individuals renting out beds in their homes at cheap to high prices. Air B&B has become a player in the Ibiza market and upsetting local hotel owners. In Ireland revenue have stated that they will chase down people who rent out rooms and I would expect that the powerful Ibiza Hotel Federation will soon find a way to stymie the growth of this private market. So enjoy its diversity and personal hospitality while you can.
Carl Cox
The Ben Kenobi on the Ibiza electronic scene, this mixing master has been entertaining the crowds for over three decades. His classic Balearic style is unique and a visit to Ibiza without experiencing a Coxy set is similar to not sampling a Heirbas. More popular than ever this summer, Music Is Revolution at Space, is one of the few parties posting the sold out signs.
A Classic Ibiza Experience Sunrise@Vista Club |
Do Not Sleep.
This hard working party is attracting all the workers in San Antonio and Playa Den Bossa, so be assured of a real party vibe with all the right people in attendance. Darius Syrossian has been performing a lot better than he was at Sankeys, (maybe because he has a point to prove) and his sets alongside, Sante and Sydney Charles, are spontaneous and freestyle. The sight of the sun rising in the Vista Room, is a classic Ibiza experience and the sound system is not too bad either. Get the basics right and the crowds will follow. Great to see the team at Privilege back in the game under difficult circumstances. This party is in the running for Best New Party of 2015.
Heart Ibiza
Owned by brothers Ferran and Albert Adria, there are enough good reports emanating from this brand new venue to suggest that it will be around for a long time to come. More artistic than Lio with a dark interior and a rooftop terrace, that serves food from quirky street stalls, Heart Ibiza, is already popular with the locals which is always a positive sign for any new venue. Duran Duran play Heart on September 8 and if on the island, it would be a great time to check out the venue.
