With the start of the Ibiza 2020 season set to kick off early on May 9, we take a look at the parties expected to set the trends on the island this summer. The Space Opening Fiesta was the event that traditionally signaled the start of the clubbing season at the end of May, but the islands electronic landscape has changed much since the fall of Pepe Rosellos’ club in 2016. From the ashes of Space has risen the monolith form of Hi and its commercial presence has altered the once relaxed clubbing energy on the island. For the first time in a decade, Amnesia is playing catch up to Hi, which had designed a club for the Instagram generation and spent big attracting top talent to assist it bedding neatly into the Balearic fabric. Will it dominate once again, or can Amnesia regain its Mojo and fight back. Here are some of the parties we expect all the underground action to center around.
Paradise at Amnesia Wednesdays
Jamie Jones has been hanging around the departures lounge of DC10 for the past two years, waiting for the right conditions to launch his trendy Paradise party at Amnesia. After the abdication of Marco Carola and Sven Vath to Pacha the timing was just right for Jones to arrive on the scene without any real competition to worry about. The move from DC10 will only enhance what was in my opinion, the islands premier Underground party, which will now be more accessible to clubbers on Wednesday nights. Amnesia reflects the industrial feel of DC10 but offers much more potential for Jones to grow and express his music. We have witnessed a number of strange moves at Amnesia in recent years, but this transfer has all the hallmarks of a match made in Heaven. By far the most exciting party to look forward to this season.
Transmoderna at DC10 Fridays.
When one door closes, another opens and the light has shone on DC10 with the astute signing of Dixon who requires a cool stage to build his presence on the island. Like Sven Vath a year earlier, Dixon found that Pacha was not the ideal venue to hold an underground party, as music is not its priority. Transmoderna never got a chance to get off the ground at Pacha last year but I expect Dixon to be a natural replacement for Jamie Jones and with him having something to prove this season, I can see Transmoderna doing some real damage at DC10.
Bedouin presents Saga at Pacha
Ibiza 2020 seems to be a season of revolving doors and one of my favorite acts since their Woomoon days Bedouin gets promoted to Dixons Friday night slot. Fridays on the island are extra hot this summer especially on the Techno scene, so Bedouin could attract a sizeable crowd to Pacha for what is an alternative party. Its Arabic, American friendly sound is perfectly suited to the club and its VIP business model. With some luck Pacha may have found a long term tenant for Friday nights at its new look venue, which was again refurbished over the winter months to increase capacity after the sale of El Pacha Hotel to the Ruben Brothers.
Tale Of Us at Hi.
This party continues to build on its success, season after season, adding real integrity to the Hi program. The Milanese Techno maestros are known to curate their musical menus with the skill of a Michelin Chef. Fine Italian and international fare, served up with the production quality of Romain Pissenems creative digital kitchen.
Ants at Ushuaia Saturdays.
One of the coolest brands in Ibiza right now is Ants at Ushuaia. It was the creation of French wizard Yann Pissenem, its dark underground theme resonating with its own distinct crowd. This year Pissenem will play homage to the Hollywood B movie genre by introducing a giant killer arthropod to proceedings and with rumours suggesting a new room to host a subterranean after party, Ants will be all the rage again this summer.
